Mayor Adolph Sutro built it for the working class: 25¢ for swim + towel + suit (laundered!). Tidal pools flushed 1.8M gallons of ocean water in 5 hours.
6 saltwater + 1 fresh, heated to 70°F. High dive, trapezes, seal shows.
Sutro stuffed it with Egyptian mummies, totem poles, taxidermy — a dime museum.
Decline → ice rink → arson (ruled). Ruins preserved by National Park Service.
Three incarnations (1863, 1896 French chateau, 1909 neo-classical) hosted Mark Twain, presidents, and WWII soldiers. Closed 2020, reopening soon — check NPS updates.
